Why love stories and gore and black magic don't mix

Okay so I recently read the last book of one of my favorite trilogies The Icemark Chronicles: The Last Battle of the Icemark. In this book the violence and black magic is more and more as the evil Cronus rises again, but sadly the mushy love stories increase as well. One of the main characters and protagonist Cressida Lindenshield falls in love with the Polypotain Generals son Ledionus or something like that I can't remember most of the Polypotain names. The love story is mushy and interrupts the violence, gore, and black magic which makes this story extraordinary for me. Why Stuart Hill my favorite author why add this completely not germane theme in this book?
