Why Martians and some random dudes boring personal life dont mix

Right now I'm reading war of the worlds, i am an alien fanatic, i love district nine, the alien aliens movie series, and i have watched the original V and i am watching the new story addition of V. But in War of the Worlds is famous for its aliens right, but there is very little talk of aliens in action. Even the talk of heat rays frying cities is still overrun by this guys personal life. About his wife who was probably fried. But yeah this guy is so boring, he just is running not even thinking to fight, its retarded, im thinking of putting the book down and using it as fire fuel.
